Healthy Aging in Mecklenburg County

Used for 2023 budget cover

Mecklenburg County aims to educate and equip residents, sixty years and older, to remain independent and community dwelling. The County has facilitated two programs including the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) and Matter of Balance curriculum at Rockwell AME Zion Church. The Healthy Aging initiative coordinates biweekly health education with nutrient balanced meals provided by the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program (SCNP). We also collaborate with more than ten community organizations, such as Oak Street Health, Charlotte Legal Advocacy, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, who serve as a resource to program participants on various topics including scam awareness, fire safety, mental health, and more. Food is a vital part of life, yet many seniors have nutritional challenges including transportation and the availability of healthy food near their homes. The Mobile Food Market is considered a viable solution to address these barriers. This is especially true for seniors who do not drive or own cars.

The market provides access and convenience to improve the problem of food insecurity in our community.

In FY22 Mecklenburg County was able to provide fare free quality of life trips to our county residents 60 years and over. 75,393 trips had the $1.50 fare waived thanks to Federal 5307 CARES dollars allocated to Mecklenburg County. This saved our customers nearly $114,000. Customers can access this service by calling the Transportation scheduling line at 704-336-4547.
